Intern Spotlight: Zoe Maxwell

Zoe Maxwell
How would you describe your overall experience participating through this program? What were your initial expectations, and how did the actual experience compare?
This summer interning at Riven gave me immense knowledge of working in a woodshop and a new perspective on my future career goals. Going into this internship, I didn’t know what to expect since it was my first hands-on experience in my field of interest. My main expectation was to learn about the shop environment and business model. However, my experience went beyond that. I'm grateful I was able to work one-on-one with the owner of Riven and learn about the freedom he has within his business and design practice.
What tasks or projects did you work on?
I mainly helped with tasks like sanding, cutting joinery, milling, planing, laminating, and assisting with other tasks as needed. Over the summer, I worked on a range of projects including the restoration and customization of a historic table, the completion of a cherry kitchen island, painting a set of doors, building a walnut coffee table, a large extending dining table, refinishing restaurant tabletops, and a massive wall hung console. I found myself taking note of small things that the owner does that make a huge difference in the quality and care of his work. With each project I learned a new construction or finishing technique that I can carry into my own practice. I was also able to implement what I learned into a project of my own.
Did you gain meaningful experiences? What was most valuable?
Yes, I definitely gained meaningful experiences this summer. Looking back, I feel I have a new perspective and deeper knowledge of craft, design, and the possibilities of owning a studio in the future. I especially valued our open conversations about finances and pricing work. I now have a clearer understanding of running a business and the freedom that can come with it.
I truly enjoyed my internship this summer and feel more prepared and confident going into my senior year at art school and feel like I have made great connections with fellow makers in my community.
How did this experience impact the likelihood of you pursuing a career in the wood production sector?
My experience this summer definitely impacted my likelihood of pursuing a career in the wood production field. I see this in terms of either owning my own studio in the future or working in a field related to furniture design with an emphasis on woodworking.
